Christ is the icon of humility and service as He shows His Disciples practically how to serve each other in love as their servant, even though He is their master, for He humbly washes their feet in love. When He was done he said, “Know ye what I have done to you?” He then continued, “I have given you an example that ye should do as I have done unto you” (John 13:12, 14).
In the world, people are often consumed with how to make other people serve them or follow their advice and their ways, rather than doing loving humble service to all those around them, including those who are their servants or juniors. This is not the Christian Way, for when speaking of this type of service to others He said, “If you know these things, happy are ye if ye do them” (John 13:17). Humble service with loving attention and goodwill is something that, like active generosity in alms-giving, cannot be understood without doing them with a grateful mind. By practice the ineffable grace of God stretches the heart to be able to receive more love and grace, and only then can we understand what the Lord meant when He said, “It is more blessed to give than receive.”
