This modern icon of the Transfiguration is by the Monk Michael of the Holy Mountain of Mt. Athos in northeastern Greece. The Transfiguration is a very important feast celebrated in the Orthodox Church because the Light of the Transfiguration is the Light of God sent to each person when they are ready to receive it gladly, and to be truly changed from their earthly ways to heavenly ways, with faithfulness, humility, thankfulness, and great purity in heart, soul, and mind. If we wish to enter the Kingdom that has been prepared for those who love Him, we, too, must be transfigured and changed. O God, help us begin to do so today!
Here in the icon, Moses stands next to Christ on His right hand, and the Prophet Elias on His left. The three Apostles, Peter, James, and John are led up the mountain on the left side of the icon and are led down after the Transfiguration on the right. Below, they have fallen down, overwhelmed by seeing this transforming experience and hearing God the Father speak and say, “This is my beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased; hear Him.” Let us grow ears to hear Him by listening to Him closely every day of our life.
