This icon is from Lebanon and was painted in the early 14th c. and was restored later in the 18th-19th century. Byzantine heritage, both artistic and cultural, or more properly the heritage of east Roman Christendom, was widespread across the Roman Empire that was converted by the Emperor Constantine the Great after the Edict of Milan in about 313 A.D, with local variations depending on the local culture in which it was found. In this case, the Levant was a early stronghold of Christian Faith
The icon is of the Hodegetria or Directress style, for the Virgin is indicating with her right hand the solution to every problem of mankind: her Divine Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, as He is cradled in her arms with maternal love and care. He holds a scroll of the Wisdom of the Prophets in His left hand, which He fulfills completely, and blesses us with His right hand. Above the Virgin Mary are two holy angels also holding scrolls in their hands exclaiming the wonder and praise of the Birth-Giver of God and her Son who together give such comfort to us. May we follow their advice and pray that our souls turn to Christ and so be saved.
