Saint John the Theologian in Silence is the name of this particular icon of the famous Evangelist and the beloved disciple of the Lord. It shows an angel whispering in his ear while Saint John contemplates what he will write in his Gospel, Epistles, and Revelation, for all this was truly God-inspired. Saint John was a young man when called by the Lord from the fisherman’s nets of his father Zebedee on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, with his brother James and his partner Simon bar-Jonah, later Saint Peter.
Saint John leaned on the Lord’s breast at His Mystical Supper early in the night in which He was betrayed by Judas. Saint John, with his brother Saint James and with Saint Peter, were witnesses of many special events in Christ’s life including His Transfiguration on Mount Tabor and His Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. Saint John stood at the Cross when Jesus suffered and died when all the other Apostles fled away. Saint John was sent as an Apostle with the Deacon Prochorus to preach in Asia Minor, and spent time in Patmos and Ephesus, where his tomb is today. In great old age, he went to live forever with his beloved Lord in a.d. 100.
