Description

Saint Joachim was of the tribe of Judah, a descendant of King David. He lived a devout and very charitable life as Saint Anna’s husband for 50 years, but they remained childless. At that time, if a couple did not bear children it was considered a disgrace, and a lack of blessing from God. Then God heard their supplications and sent His Archangel Gabriel to give them the assurance that Saint Anna would conceive and bear “A daughter most blessed….through whom will come the salvation of the world.” From them was born the Most Holy Virgin Mary.

They raised the child until she was three, then they brought her to the Temple in Jerusalem, where the Theotokos would dedicate herself to God alone. Saint Anna lived long enough to see and hold her daughter’s Divine Son in her arms, and then left this world at the age of 79. Saint Joachim didn’t see the Lord in this life, only living 12 years after the Virgin Mary was born, and then died full of years when he was 80. This 11th century mosaic icon is from Nea Moni Monastery Church in Chios. There is a matching icon of Saint Anna, which is our icon number S388.
