Description

The Lord is never compelled by circumstances to do things against His Will, but has knowledge of all things and the freedom to choose at all times, yet He is constrained by Love to do what is pleasing to His Father and truly Good for all.  This love is intense and all-encompassing, and is best shown for us during His Passion, Crucifixion, and Death.  As it says in the Kontakion for the Cross, “O Thou Who wast willing lifted up on the Cross, bestow Thy mercy upon the new nation called after Thee….”

In this 15th century Roumanian icon Christ is being pulled up to be nailed on the Cross by two soldiers and is surrounded by the Jewish elders who approve of this painful death for someone they think is a blasphemer.  Christ does not give room for middle ground in regard to His own Person, for either those who see Him believe Him or oppose Him.  Those elders standing here had their hearts darkened, which influenced how they saw the Lord.  Although they prayed every day, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord thy God, the Lord is one” when He came in answer to the prayers of all men, His meekness and humility was misunderstood by the pride of life.
