Christ touched the lives of those around Him who sought the healing of their souls and bodies, for He is truly the Great Physician. The Gospel says, “They brought unto Him all sick people that were taken with diverse diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatics, and those that had the palsy; and He healed them” (Matt 4:24).
Outside of Jerusalem in this icon, the lame and bent-over, the lepers, and the demoniacs are shown coming to Jesus as He blesses them and heals them both inwardly and outwardly, for inward healing is always needed for any outward healing to be complete and lasting. The oil of gladness for us who are called to the Kingdom of God is the reception of God’s mercy and love into our hearts and minds, and also into our bodies and thoughts, so that we become full of this life-creating mercy and love, and then reflect it outwardly to others as naturally as the sun shines its beneficent rays on the world. First we must be receptive and let God open us up to receive this wondrous light. Let us pray that we, too, are open to receive His blessings and healing now as He healed of old.
