The great Prophet Isaiah (whose name in Hebrew means “God is salvation”) was the son of the Prophet Amos and lived 700 years before Christ. His prophesies spanned the reign of five Kings of Israel or Judea: Uzziah, Joatham, Achaz, Hezekiah, and Mannaseh. He prophesied about a vision of God on His High Throne surrounded by Bodiless Hosts, about the sinful state of God’s People in his time, and the captivity of Israel and their exile, their restoration from exile, the destruction and later restoration of Jerusalem, and most importantly, detailed prophesies about the coming of the Messiah, or anointed one, Christ our Saviour.
“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulders. And His name will be called Angel of Great Counsel, Mighty God, Father of the Age to Come, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6-7). In the fulfillment of this prophecy, Christ is shown here with angelic wings, with His right hand giving the priestly blessing, shaping His fingers to form the letters “IC XC,” the abbreviated form of the Greek words for “Jesus Christ.” He also holds a scroll as He is the Great Prophet.
